Billy Madison

This page is my list of Billy Madison goofs. In case you're wondering, when I say "goof" I'm referring to a place where something was messed up or overlooked in the editing of the movie, like in Star Wars where the Storm Trooper bangs his head on a doorway in the background of one scene.

I did not personally find these goofs -- I don't have that much free time. My thanks goes out to Gary Sweeney for first finding these things and sending them to me, as well as giving me the idea to do this section of my site at all. I add new goofs from users, so check back here occasionally. And if you have noticed any goofs not listed here, or if you disagree with a goof here, please e-mail them to me and I will put them up here and give you credit for it.

I don't have the time to update this page very often, but I assure that if you send me a goof and it is good, or if you send me a correction, I will e-mail you back whenever I do put it on the site. But I will not e-mail you back until then.

So here's the list of goofs, in the order that they appear in the movie:

  • The glass Billy is holding when on his raft disappears.

  • The suntan lotion at the beginning is runny in some scenes but not in others.

  • In the beginning when Billy gets out of the pool to get the nudie magazines he is drenching wet but when he gets to the mailbox he is totally dry.

  • In the beginning of the movie, Billy puts on the suntan lotion and still has it on his stomach when he leaves to get his nudie magazines. But when they show Billy at his mailbox, the suntan lotion is not on him!

  • In the part when Billy opens the mailbox to get his nudie magazines, they didn't edit out some weird noise. It's either a wolf howling or a fire engine, I can't tell.

  • When Billy is at the mailbox getting his nudie magazines, his shirt has one button buttoned, but when he pulls up to the house his shirt is all buttoned up.

  • Billy never presses the break all the way before getting out of the golf cart. In the beginning when he is chasing the penguin it shows him pressing the break then in the next shot he is on the ground in front of the door.

  • When the penguin was walking up the rug by the front door, there were footprints, and in some of the scenes there were, and in others there weren't.

  • When Billy tries to hug the penguin, you can see the penguin is behind the family crest on the carpet. Billy falls in front of the family crest, so even if the penguin was there, he wouldn't have been close to hugging it.

  • In the scene where Billy is sitting in the bathtub with his bottles of shampoo and conditioner, he goes through the shampoo is better and conditioner is better joke. You can see him then catch the swan faucet out of the corner of his eye. If you look closely, you can see him think twice and then adlib the line, "Stop looking at me swan!" If your television volume is turned up, you can hear the director and cameramen and whoever else burst out laughing in the background right after he says it.

  • At the restaurant, during the part when Jack is asking Billy about sex with Jack Nickelson, the camera angle cuts from behind Jack's head to behind Billy's head. If you look, Jack is chewing every time it shows him from the front, but never from the back.

  • After Billy, Jack, and Frank throw the pickles on the glass, there is a streak for Billy's that proves it is the winner, however, as Billy stands up and exclaims "Oh my God I am the winner!" his pickle amazingly shows up much higher on the glass and further to the right than it was before.

  • When Eric, Carl, and Brian are playing Snooker, Brian hits the ball, then Eric hits the ball before they all stop moving from the previous hit.

  • After Old Man Clemons puts out the flaming bag of poop he takes off his boot and sniffs it, but there is nothing on it, even though he just smeared his boot all in it.

  • When Billy is waiting for the school bus on his first day, he's singing the "back to school" song. When the school bus passes him, you hear kids laughing and talking on the bus, however there are no children to be seen. The bus is completely empty except for the bus driver! So, where are the laughs and giggles coming from?

  • When the little girl says: "You've got a misshaped head," she starts the sentence in front of Billy but is magically behind him when she finishes the sentence.

  • During Billy's first day of school, the teacher asks the students to say hello to the new student, "Billy." The class responds in a unison "Hello Billy!" If you look closely, you can see a boy in the background mouth the words "Hello Billy Ma..." He was going to say "Hello Billy Madison" but stopped.

  • When Billy is in first grade and all the kids get up to hug him, the camera is on the kids and the little dark skinned girl is walking towards Billy with her arms open, but when the camera goes on to Billy hugging the kids she is not there!!!

  • When Billy is in first grade and he is playing dodgeball, after he gets his payback on that first O'Doyle, he was just hitting kids left and right. There was a kid he hit twice in the same game. It was the little boy in the pink shirt and the boy had really light blonde hair, if you look closely you can't miss.

  • When Billy is making the snowman and eating the paste, his snowman is all messed up. Later, when he's talking to the "mucus queen" and Miss Lippy comes out to give him his stuff, the snowman she gives him is perfect.

  • When Billy is sleeping in first grade, you can see that he's pushing out the drool with his tongue.

  • When Billy is in the bathroom, he unzips to take a leak, and then he falls down because he is too tall. After lying on the ground a few seconds, he gets up, but never re-zips!

  • Billy Madison graduates the third grade near Valentine's Day. Then why the hell is he out in the pool every time he graduates?! The trees are green and he is putting on suntan lotion. I can assure you that it is not a tropical region because of the evergreen trees at his mansion. I don't know of anyone who plays in the pool in the middle of winter!!!

  • On Billy's first day in Ms. Vaughn's class, he and Ernie are talking at their desks in the second row but there are no desks in front of them. However after Ms. Vaughn walks in and the camera goes back to them there are two girls in front of them in desks.

  • When Billy is in the third grade and he is writing on the chalk board, if you look closely, "dugout" is straight and on the lines, but, when the camera leaves and comes back to him it is on a slant.

  • At the beginning of the movie Billy doesn't know that "rock" is spelled R-O-C-K, and in second grade he almost misspells the word "couch." So it should be pretty clear that Billy has trouble with spelling. So how come he knows exactly how to spell a word like Rizzuto?? (He knew how to spell Rizzuto, just not how to write a cursive "z").

  • When Billy is at lunch with all of the third graders and one of the kids starts burping out letters of the alphabet, the last letter that he burps, "G," is not mouthed at all, but the sound magically comes out somehow.

  • When Billy is with Ernie, and they are going to call Veronica, Billy knows her number right away. If he has never called her before, how does he know her number right away without looking at anything?

  • When Billy's third grade class is going on the field trip, Miss Vaughn is sitting on the aisle side of a seat next to a girl. A sandwich is thrown at the bus driver, and when Miss Vaughn turns around to ask who threw it, she is sitting next to the window. The next time she is shown, when she glances at the bus driver, she is back where she was before.

  • When Billy is explaining to Danny that touching Veronica's boobs is assault, if you look closely Ernie is next to him talking to himself and making faces.

  • When Billy is dared to touch Veronica's boobs on the school bus there are three seats between him and Veronica but when he sits back down there are only 2 seats between them.

  • When the class is on the bus, and Billy touches Ms. Vaughn's boobs, he leans over and you can see the road out the back window. If you were actually paying attention, you could see that they kept driving on a dotted lane divider (which I'm sure is illegal anyways) on a four-lane road. When the bus driver throws the banana out the window, there is a clip of it landing. When it lands, the bus is in the lane (like it's supposed to be) and it is a two-lane road.

  • When Chris Farley is peeling the banana on the bus, he tears one part of the banana skin down then throws it out the window. The banana peel that ends up on the street, however, is peeled in numerous sections.

  • When they are on the field trip and the old lady is saying how it was that damn Sasquatch that stole the lunches, you could see a girl in the background going into the building. Then when Billy is walking over to Ernie, you can see the same girl going into the cabin.

  • When Billy is on the third grade field trip, Ernie pees his pants. When they first show his pants, it looks like it has been there for a while, but after Billy gets his pants wet, they show Ernie's pants again. This time, however, the wet spot is much larger and wetter!

  • When Billy sits next to Ernie at the beginning of Valentine's day, he is sitting on the left side of the classroom, but when he is opening up the cards he is in the middle of the room.

  • If Billy graduated third grade on Feb. 14th (the latest day in the year that we know for sure Billy was in third grade), there still aren't enough weeks, between then and June 15th, for him to finish graduating. He couldn't have finished on time even if he hadn't quit due to Principal Anderson's lies!

  • After Billy graduates third grade and they are having a graduation party for him, they show a shot of the entire pool. In the pool is a man riding a blue jet ski. In the next scene Max Anderson magically appears in the pool in a inflatable lobster as well as another man riding a red jet ski.

  • At the party for Billy when the band is playing, it shows a shot from far off and above. If you look far off behind the stage and behind the trees you can see the crew's trucks, tents, and trailers.

  • In Billy's tent, Veronica opens his toilet door and hears the sounds of girls moaning, then closes it and the sound stops. If you look when they walk away, the door swings back open, but the sounds don't start again!

  • When Billy is going through the grades, Eric pokes out his two eyes with a pencil, but they magically reappear for the next grade.

  • When Billy first pulls up to high school in the black Trans Am, you can see the shaker hood scoop 'vibrating' because of the engine. He shuts off the car, yet the scoop is still vibrating!!

  • When Billy comes and visits Veronica from high school, she is teaching her class about prime numbers. The board behind Veronica says "PRIME NUMBERS 1 3 5 7 9 11". But we all know from math class that 1 is not technically a prime number, and 2 IS a prime number. Furthermore, 9 is not a prime number. It seems Veronica intended to teach odd numbers.

  • When Billy calls to apologize to Danny McGraff, the phone starts ringing before Billy finishes dialing the number.

  • When Carl says to Eric, "So you still don't think Billy is gonna make it?" and Eric says, "Trust me Carl baby, I KNOW he's not gonna make it." Then Carl says "Would you excuse me a minute?" and then he goes to tell Billy about what Carl said. Carl tells Billy that Eric is up to something.. and then says he did his little "weasel laugh" but Eric never did the weasel laugh.

  • When Principle Anderson is in the pool, he is not wearing flippers, though when he walks in the house to use the bathroom he is magically wearing flippers.

  • When Principle Anderson is in the pool he is wearing a shirt that gets wet when people go buy on jet ski's and splash him. However, when he goes in the house to use the restroom his shirt is all dry again.

  • When Principle Anderson asks where the restrooms are Eric isn't holding anything, but after the next shot he is holding the magazine.

  • When Eric shows the wrestling magazine to Principal Anderson, he calls it Wrestling World, but on the magazine it says World Wrestling.

  • After Billy is set up by Principal Anderson on TV, he decides going back to school is a waste of time. In the next scene he is seen opening a can of beer and taking one sip, then he drops the can and the sound that it makes when it hits the ground is that of an empty can. (How can he empty the whole can in one sip?)

  • When the third graders go to visit Principal Anderson at his home, he tells them to leave. Then he sees all the other kids. When the camera shows Principal Anderson again after this, if you look closely, you can see a shadow of a man walk across the wall behind him.

  • When Billy sees the penguin in Veronica's house, it is only holding a drink. When he looks at it again the penguin is holding a drink and a cigarette.

  • In the scene where Billy, Jack, and Frank go to Veronica's to go out, Bridgette Wilson has accidentally left her wedding ring on her left hand! Look in the last cut of that scene where Veronica puts her hand on Billy's shoulder!

  • When Veronica goes to get Billy back to school when he is with his drunk friends it shows Billy with the red lobster's head on his chest, then it cuts to the next scene where it's around his neck when Veronica kicks him!

  • When Veronica comes over to talk to Billy about going back to school, Jack and Frank are sleeping, and Jack has nothing under his head. Then they wake up while Veronica is beating up Billy, and it shows Jack and Frank, and Jack has a Budweiser box under his head.

  • When Eric is in his office, and he says "No, no, no, NO!" and throws the stapler at the secretary, you hear it hit her before she/it hits the floor. The stapler is on the floor before it even hits her.

  • The O'Doyle's are driving their car, slip on a banana peal and fall off the cliff. Have you ever wondered how that strip of road with all the grass and trees turned from straight valleys into deep hills/pits of sand? Hmmm.

  • When the O'Doyle's go off the cliff, it is unintentional, correct? Then why does the driver of the car turn into the direction of the cliff, does he want to die? I don't think so!!!!!

  • If you look closely under the car's front end in the scene when the O'Doyle's go over the cliff, you can see some sort of hook which is probably used to pull the car along.

  • In the academic decathlon Veronica Vaughn wears two different outfits.

  • In the chemistry portion of academic decathlon, the shoe Billy pulls out of the pot it is a right shoe, but he is missing a left shoe. Is he wearing two of the same shoes? I think not.

  • When Billy and Eric are cooking pies and Billy opens up the oven....notice that none of the burners are on or even red when he takes out the pie!

  • When Principal Anderson elbow drops Eric near the end, the hurt arm changes from being the right arm to the left arm.

  • In the last scenes when he is graduating and he says that he will give the company to Carl, it immediately shows a close up of Billy's dad shaking Carl's hand. As soon as the camera goes back onto Billy, I noticed that in the background Billy's dad is shaking Carl's hand again, but if you rewind it and look at their facial expressions on the first shake, they match the second handshake. They used the same footage twice!

  • Is it just me, or do you think it's weird that Eric is at Billy's graduation ceremony after wielding a gun in front of everyone on the stage? Shouldn't he be in jail?!? And why would he want to be there anyway, after all he hates Billy with a vengeance!

NOTE: The following are NOT goofs:
  • When Billy comes out of the bathroom and Veronica says "that milk belongs to that classroom," she is talking about the classroom on the piece of paper attached to the tray of milk, not the bathroom. Do not e-mail me saying that Veronica is calling the bathroom a classroom.

  • After Veronica takes Billy out of the classroom, and he says "Veronica Vaughn, sooo hot, want to touch the heinie," he did know her first name at that point in the movie because he had been chasing her around already, even if it was never shown. This is evident from his referring to her as "that girlie I've been chasing around." Do not e-mail me saying that he shouldn't have known her first name at that point in the movie.

  • When Billy, Jack, and Frank throw the pickles onto the glass, Billy's is the highest, but later Billy's pickle is the farthest down. This is not a goof. If you look closely, you will see that there is a grease mark where each pickle has moved down the glass. The pickle didn't magically move to the bottom, it just slid down faster (perhaps it was greasier than the others or something).

  • In the scene where Billy is getting his nudie magazines, Billy looks at two magazines, She-Male Fiesta and Women Over 80, before coming to Drunk Chicks. There is a fourth magazine that Billy doesn't look at. It is not a goof that he doesn't look at it.

  • When Veronica comes to beat Billy back to his senses, there is an extra pair of legs laying there. I considered this a goof in the past, but there are just too many possible explanations or rationalizations of it, so don't e-mail me about it.

  • When Veronica comes to get Billy back in school, Billy gets soaking wet, but when they start singing Billy's Victory Song, Veronica is in a different outfit and Billy is completely dry. This is part of what makes this funny- there is also suddenly an orchestra playing and they randomly know the words to a song that they're making up on the fly, and all the kids and the clown and Juanita is suddenly there. These can't all be considered goofs.

  • When Eric is baking in the home economics portion of the academic decathlon, he catches on fire. In the next scenes, he is not burned at all. While this defies logic, I would consider it part of the humor, not a goof, since it clearly must have been intentional.

If you have a goof other than one of these, please send it to me.
